A message from the local chair, Larisa Belichenko

Welcome to Birobidjan!
The 6th FEELTA Conference will be held in Birobidjan, capital of the Jewish Autonomous Region (JAR). The conference will take place from June 24-26, 2006 at Birobidjan State Pedagogical Institute.
Here is some general information about the venue of the conference. The Jewish Autonomous Region celebrated the 70th anniversary of its foundation last year. You may learn more about the JAR and its capital, and enjoy pictures of this beautiful place at http://www.eao.ru.
Birobidjan State Pedagogical Institute (BSPI) is the first, and so far the only, higher education institution in the JAR. It was opened in 1989 with two departments - Philological and Pedagogical. Now we have nine departments, 6,375 full-time and extra-mural students, 252 teachers and branches in eight cities throughout the country.
The Foreign Language Department was opened in 1990 with only one Chair, which trained teachers of English and Yiddish. BSPI is still the only Russian higher education institution that trains teachers of Yiddish. We now train 300 students in English, Chinese, Yiddish, Hebrew and French.
The FEELTA conference is your unique opportunity to network with professional colleagues, to share your experience in promoting and achieving excellence in teaching in the quiet and cozy atmosphere of a beautiful and somewhat unusual provincial city. We know you have a lot to offer our local teachers in terms of professional development. So, if you are willing to share generously innovative and practical ideas to take back to the classroom, if you feel somewhat tired of the strains and stresses of big cities, and if you are not afraid of mosquitoes, come and enjoy the friendly atmosphere, hospitality, and wonderful nature of Birobidjan!
